Fellowships at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Russia

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is a private graduate research university in Skolkovo, Russia, a suburb of Moscow. Established in 2011 in collaboration with MIT, Skoltech will educate coming generations of researchers and entrepreneurs, advance scientific knowledge, and foster technological innovation to address critical issues facing Russia and the world in the new century.

At full scale, Skoltech will offer M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in five areas:

  • Information Science and Technology (pilot in 2012, full from Sept. 2013)
  • Energy Science and Technology (pilot in 2012, full from Sept. 2013)
  • Biomedical Science and Technology (pilot in 2013, full from Sept. 2014)
  • Space Science and Technology (pilot in 2014, full from Sept. 2015)
  • Nuclear Science and Technology (pilot in 2014, full from 2015)


Applications are welcomed from students in the final year of an undergraduate program, or from those who have already attained a Bachelor’s of Science degree or higher. Applicants should have received training in fields relevant to Skoltech’s five M.Sc. Programs, including:

  • Computer science, computer engineering, computational mathematics, applied math and science, electrical engineering, informatics, etc.
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics
  • Materials science
  • Aerospace science and engineering
  • Nuclear science and technology

Students from undergraduate programs in the humanities or social sciences should have significant training in a field related to one of Skoltech’s programs.


For every admitted M.Sc. student, Skoltech will provide an internationally competitive fellowship, including a tuition waiver, subsidized housing, an assistantship, and medical insurance.


Admission to Skoltech is a competitive two-stage process. In the first stage, prospective students submit an online application, including information on:

  • Educational background
  • Official transcripts
  • Personal statement
  • Letters of recommendation,
  • Results of an official English-language test (TOEFL or IELTS)

From the pool of online applications, the Selection Committee invites semi-finalists to a “Selection Weekend” for two days of group activities (science, engineering, technology, and design challenges) and interviews.

The online application is available from early August 2013 until late January 2014. Selection Weekends will be held in March 2014.
